Our Approach

Your Financial Life – Optimized and In Order

Most firms manage your money. But we’re focused on your whole financial life. You call the shots; think of us as your personal CFO. We’ll bring the ideas, run the trade-offs, make the recommendations, and then execute alongside you. We’ve got eyes on the financial complexities, making sure all the parts of the plan work together to accomplish your vision.

Real Life Requires Balance

We don’t pretend there’s one silver bullet; we know life is full of trade-offs. Save more or spend more? Convert now or defer? Retire at 55 or keep the equity vesting? Pay for college or fund financial independence?

We look at your whole financial picture and help you find the right balance. There’s rarely one right answer; there’s give and take that fits your life. Our job is to show you both sides clearly, model the outcomes, and help you choose what works for you right now. Then we keep adjusting and optimizing as life changes.

Building a Plan Around Your Actual Life

Once you’re an Abound client, we assign you a dedicated advisor and a support advisor–both certified CFP® professionals. Beyond your dedicated advisors, you’re backed by the power of the whole firm, including CPAs and CFAs.

From there, we build your plan together. After digging into your financial details, we’ll kick off our relationship with a risk assessment and planning meetings to get the full picture, including what’s uniquely critical to you, whatever that happens to be. From there, you’ll have a plan built entirely around your life, not a template. And your fee doesn’t start until you’ve seen the whole plan and feel good about it.

Your plan is built around the whole picture. Our services are not a la carte – as a client of the firm, everything is included in your fee. No add ons or surprises. Here are some of the key areas we cover.

Tax Planning
Tax Strategy That’s Actually Strategic

This is the difference most clients notice first. We may not be in the business of filing returns, but we have CPAs on staff anyway. Why? Because the strategy behind your return is where real money is won or lost. We design it, then we check the work to make sure the strategy actually gets deployed. The goal is simple: keep more of what you earn, on your terms, for as long as possible.

What it looks like in practice:

  • Roth conversion planning to the top of the right bracket
  • Asset location across your pre-tax, Roth, and brokerage buckets, so the right dollars grow in the right place
  • Backdoor and mega-backdoor Roth
  • Quarterly tax projections, updated from your income
  • Treasury ladders that cut state tax on idle cash
  • Charitable timing and gifting of appreciated shares
  • Equity-comp planning around RSUs, ISOs and AMT, and ESPPs
  • Planning around the “widow’s tax” before it ever arrives
Investment Management
A Portfolio Built for Your Goals

We don’t run model portfolios, your plan is built around your goals, your tax situation, and the positions you already hold. We won’t sell your low-basis stock just to force you into a template.

We’re fundamentally opposed to timing the market. Our discipline is staying diversified and patient, because your asset mix is what drives the vast majority of your long-term returns, not chasing the next hot stock or manager.

For core exposure, we index and keep costs near rock-bottom; where active management can genuinely add value, we use it deliberately. And rest assured – we’re fully independent, not owned by a bank, not tied to any product.

  • Planned for both risk capacity and risk tolerance, so you can stay invested when markets get rocky
  • Held-away accounts, like your 401(k), managed right alongside everything else
Net Worth & Account Aggregation
Current, Comprehensive Picture of Your Assets

Cash, investments, real estate, stock options, even insurance cash value — everything you own, pulled into one always-current view. You see each account and your whole household together, so the plan is built on the complete picture, not a slice of it.

Retirement & Cash Flow
A Stress-Tested Plan for Living Well

We stress-test your plan every year with Monte Carlo modeling, aiming for the confidence to sleep at night without under-spending your most active years. We want you thinking about your life, not your account balances.

  • Map your “go-go years” so spending matches the years you’re most active
  • Tax-efficient withdrawal sequencing, turning your assets into dependable mailbox money
  • Healthcare planned for from day one: bridging COBRA, navigating ACA coverage and subsidies before Medicare, and managing taxable income so those years cost you less.
Estate Planning
Keep Your Estate Up to Date

We start by reviewing what you already have, then tell you honestly what needs to change and what doesn’t. We won’t manufacture an irrevocable trust just to look clever, we’re focused entirely on what you need and staying up to date when the laws change. We know your plan so well, we’ll probably call you before your estate attorney does.

  • A plan that keeps up with changing federal and state laws
  • Attorneys in all 50 states, included in your fee — no separate five-figure estate bill
  • A plan built on what you actually need, not complexity for its own sake
Risk Management & Insurance
Coverage, Not Commissions

We’re fee-only fiduciaries, which means we don’t sell insurance or annuities — ever. What we do is a proper needs analysis: how much coverage, for how long, in what structure. Then we’ll help you get what you actually need.

  • A layered term strategy built around your actual coverage needs
  • Break-even and surrender analysis on policies you already own
  • Shopping for the cheapest quality coverage through an independent broker
  • Long-term care planning, including the 55–58 “sweet spot” and hybrid products worth a look
Education Planning
Funding College and Alternative Paths

A 529 strategy with nuance most people miss. And honest conversations about trade school or alternatives. The best plan flexes for your kids, not the other way around.

  • State-deduction optimization
  • Income phase-outs
  • Overfunding risk
  • Allocation matched to how soon the money is needed
Charitable Planning
Give More, and Give It More Efficiently

Turn generosity into a legacy. When donor-advised funds are part of your plan, we’ll help you fund, allocate, and manage them. Free of charge.

  • Gifting appreciated securities instead of cash
  • Timing contributions across tax years to maximize the deduction
  • Multi-generational giving
Executive & Equity Compensation
A Comp Package That Works as Hard as You Do

This is where careful tax planning and disciplined diversification pay off the most, turning ordinary income into long-term gains.

  • RSUs and concentration risk
  • ISOs and the AMT trap
  • ESPP mechanics and the holding-period clock
  • For non-qualified deferred comp, we plan distribution elections and watch for creditor risk and 401(k) match true-ups
Business Owners & the Self-Employed
Structured for Savings, Now and at the Sale

If you own a business or earn 1099 income, how you’re structured drives how much you keep. Even a small side gig can open the door to a solo 401(k) that clears the way for backdoor Roth , the kind of move that’s easy to miss if no one’s looking for it.

And when it’s time to sell, that’s a once-in-a-lifetime event with permanent tax consequences. We plan in the window before proceeds arrive, when it matters most. We’ve walked clients through sales of every size, and we’re happy to be a sounding board long before any paperwork is signed.

  • S-corp election and reasonable compensation
  • Solo 401(k) over a SEP, layering salary deferral on top of profit-sharing
  • Cash-balance plans for high earners who want to shelter more
  • The QBI deduction
  • At the sale: earn-out structure, equity rollovers, liquidation strategy
